Fran,
We are putting the June issue together. Would you like to put a short summary of one of your books together and allow us to publish it. You could provide a book jacket too. We are trying to help writers promote their books and make parents aware of many titles.

About Me:
My Name is Bertha:
Author Fran Lewis
Illustrated by: Jamie Miller

I am Fran Lewis the author of My Name is Bertha and now Bertha Speaks Out. Before writing these short stories I was a New York City Teacher for over 30 years. I taught grades one through six and later as well as becoming the Reading and Writing Staff Developer for my school. Teaching children to read is really very rewarding and introducing them to writing and creating their own stories was exciting for the students and me as well.
Growing up can be really difficult when you are over weight or not really good at sports or dancing. I hope you will learn by reading my stories that you can be anything that you want to be and no one can stop you from reaching your goals and dreams. Not everyone is born athletic, beautiful, thin and a genius. But, every one of you is smart or excellent in something whether it is drawing, jump rope or even running track, it does not matter. Who you are makes you special. I hope that you enjoy reading about Bertha and Tillie and learn that there is a little bit of Bertha in everyone.
Love, Bertha and Fran Lewis

My second book is called Bertha Speaks Out and it focuses on real life issues that childen deal with in the Middle School as well as at home . Bertha Speaks Out can is on Barnes and Noble.com, My Shelfari.com. Goodreads and othe online sites.

Favorite Children's Books:
Good Night Moon
Something Good
Harry Potter
Artemis Fowl
Judy Blume Books- Fudge- Superfudge
Taste of Blackberries
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and all of the classics
Why should kids read?
As a Reading Specialist and Staff Developer I loved watching the faces of the children that I worked with come to life while reading the classics and many diffrerent types of short stories and novels. Reading opens up an entire world of make-believe and real life information to anyone that wants to expand their knowledge of so many things. Books are so precious and so special. Opening a new book and starting reading it creates a whole new experience for the reader from start to finish. Children need to see the importance of getting their information not just from the internet but from books that they can read and reread many times.

Bertha Fights Back

Bertha Fights Back - Fran Lewis, Author
Added by Ann B. Keller on June 25, 2009 at 8:35pm
There are several elements of truth in this story and Bertha Fights Back will grow on you as it gains momentum. What begins as a narration of the cruelties inflicted upon an overweight teenager by her cousin, Penelope Mia, quickly changes into a statement of our modern society.
Unfortunately, this is a time in which teenagers somehow manage to threaten teachers and school officials with guns and knives, whe… Continue

teenage bill of rights: by Fran Lewis: For those who think a teenager needs to know the rules

The Teenage Bill Of Rights

I wrote this to my niece when she turned 13 and thought I might share it with everyone who is about to have a teenager in their family.

On March 3, 1996 a precious gem came into my life. When I saw you in the hospital and knew right there and then that you would be my special niece and a child who I would be so proud of each and every day of her life. You have brought me so much joy and pleasure. Your smile, your kind ways and your understanding heart are rare in a t… Continue

Sisters But So Very Different
By Fran Lewis
Embrace who you are

Bertha and Tillie are sisters. Bertha, that’s me, and Tillie, grew up in the Bronx and lived in a small apartment over a candy store. On the first floor above were our cousins Philippi and Theresa. Around the corner in apartment eight lived our other cousin Annie. Bertha that’s me was short, pudgy and has a round face that is shaped like an apple. My long black hair was held up in a ponytail. Tillie, my sister, was taller than… Continue

Bertha Fights Back: My Third Book

It is finally in production and I hope that it will be out by the end of June or the beginning of July. Bertha is now a teenager in Middle School and learns what happens when other kids download pictures and other things about her on Face Book and My Space. Bertha learns that acting on impulse and doing the wrong thing can be costly. She is a really good kid but learns the hard way when the choices she makes are not only out of character but wrong. When she finally realizes what she had done and… Continue

Bertha Fights Back: My Third Book

I am hoping that Bertha Fights Back will be out by the end of June if not before. This is my third children's book and it deals with real life issues children face in Middle and HIgh School. Children must learn to understand and embrace the differences of all people of every culture and nationality. This book I really hope will bring the message of Tolerance and Understanding home.
