Profile

Hometown:
Harvey, Louisiana (15 min. from downtown New Orleans)
About Me:
Touring internationally, author and award-winning Storyteller Dianne de Las Casas sizzles on stage with “traditional folklore gone fun!” Audiences don’t just listen – they sing, clap, dance, chant, and roar with laughter. De Las Casas lived in the Philippines, Hawaii, Spain and traveled across Europe and the United States. Her varied cultural experiences nourished her imagination, and she continues to draw on that knowledge, adding depth and richness to her tales.

Her debut CD, Jambalaya ~ Stories with Louisiana Flavor, won a 2004 iParenting Media Award, a 2004 Children’s Music Web Award, and a 2005 Storytelling World Honor. Her second CD, World Fiesta, won a 2005 Children’s Music Web Award, received a rave review in ALA Booklist and was selected by School Library Journal as “Audio of the Week.” Her latest CD, Jump, Jiggle & Jam ~ A Rhythmic Romp Through Story Land, won a 2006 NAPPA Honors, 2006 Children’s Music Web Award, and rave reviews in School Library Journal and Publisher’s Weekly.

De Las Casas is the author of The Story Biz Handbook (The Story Connection), Story Fest: Crafting Story Theater Scripts (Teacher Ideas Press), Kamishibai Story Theater: The Art of Picture Telling (Teacher Ideas Press), and Handmade Tales: Stories to Make and Take (Libraries Unlimited).

Dianne de Las Casas continues to make the story connection with thousands of children every year, reaching and teaching through the art of storytelling.

Favorite Children's Books:
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Oh, The Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss
The Dot by Peter Reynolds
Princess Academy by Shannon Hale
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendack
Wild About Books by Judy Sierra
Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor
Dorrie the Witch books by Patricia Coombs
Harry Potter books by (need I say?!!) J.K. Rowling
Why should kids read?
As a child, I grew up in a military family. In addition to living overseas and not having access to American television (which was a good thing I suppose), I was also abused by my father. Books were my salvation and not only helped me through a tough time but also allowed me to dream. Books are powerful and not only have the ability to open new worlds for children, they also have the ability to make a child feel understood and not alone. Books make a difference!

Thank you for your comment. I would love to come to India. Just the other day, I made chapatti and it puffed up! I was so proud of myself. :) I have a tale from India on my second CD, World Fiesta. It's called "The Boy Who Wanted A Drum." Happy Tales to You!

Story-telling is picking up its pace in India now only. Every summer there are many summer camps for story-telling. I would love to hear you narrate a story to little kids.
